After I had fasted much and had entreated the Lord, the knowledge of the writing was revealed to me. And this is what was written:

Thy seed, Hermas, have sinned against God, and have blasphemed the Lord, and have betrayed their parents through great wickedness, and have got the name of betrayers of parents, and yet have received no profit from their betrayal.

And even to their sins they have added licentiousness and disorder of wickedness, and so the measure of their sins was filled up. But make these words known to all thy children and to thy wife, who shall be unto thee as a sister, for she too refraineth not from using her tongue.

But when she hears these words, she will refrain, and will find mercy. After that thou hast made known to them these words which the Master commanded me to reveal to thee, then all the sins which they formerly committed shall be forgiven.
